## Releasing the build

After a big moment, a track needs to settle. A downlifter, also called a downsweep, is a falling sound, such as filtered noise sweeping down, a pitch drop or a decaying synth, that guides the ear from the peak into what comes next. Paired with an impact on the first beat, it makes a drop feel heavier; at the end of a chorus it signals a change without a hard cut.

## Using them

Line up the start of the downlifter with the downbeat, then shape its length with a fade so it ends before the next phrase. Low-pass it a little if it competes with the lead. Many producers reverse a riser to make a downlifter, which is a quick way to get a matching pair. Check that both sounds are cleared before you release: the verdict on each card tells you.

## Questions

**What is the difference between a riser and a downlifter?**

A riser climbs in pitch, filter or volume to build tension towards a moment. A downlifter does the opposite: it falls away after the moment, usually starting on the downbeat of a drop or a new section.

**How long should a downlifter be?**

Usually one to four bars. Start it on the downbeat together with an impact, and let it fade under the new section so it clears space rather than covering the groove.
