Basses from synthesizers
Synth basses come in many shapes: round Moog-style tones in funk and disco, punchy square-wave stabs in house, resonant 303 acid lines, FM basses in 1980s pop and gritty saw basses in electro. Samples of single notes are useful when you don’t own the synth, and loops give you a ready-made groove to chop.
Picking and pitching
Root notes matter more for bass than for any other sample. Check the note on the card, or play the sample against a reference tone, before you map it. Short, plucky basses stay in tune across a wider range than sustained ones. Layer a sine sub under a bright synth bass if the low end needs more weight, and keep both in mono below about 120 Hz.
Free bass samples come from vintage-synth sample sites, Creative Commons archives and producers’ giveaway packs, each with its own licence. The verdict on each card says which you can release with.
