Atmosphere for lo-fi and beyond

Vinyl crackle is the quiet bed of pops and hiss that makes a beat sound like it was lifted from an old record. It glues samples from different sources together and fills the silence between notes. Lo-fi hip hop, chillhop and ambient lean on it, and a touch of it can soften a bright modern production too.

Look for long takes that loop cleanly, so the pattern of pops doesn’t repeat every bar. Crackle recorded from the run-out groove of a record contains no music, which keeps it free of copyright problems.

How loud should vinyl crackle be in a mix?
Quieter than you think: usually just audible in the gaps between notes. Turn it up until you notice it, then back it off a few decibels. High-pass it so it doesn't add mud below the drums.
Is crackle from a real record better than a plugin?
Recorded crackle has irregular pops and a real surface noise that plugins only imitate, which is why lo-fi producers often prefer it. Make sure the recording has no music in it, or that the music is cleared too.
