Short phrases with energy

Shouts and ad-libs are the vocal equivalent of a crash cymbal: a “hey!”, “let’s go”, a crowd chant or a laugh that punctuates a section. In hip hop they fill gaps between lines; in EDM, house and jersey club they announce the drop. Because they are short and dry, they are easy to pitch, chop and throw into effects.

Finding clean ones

Look for dry, close-miked recordings without music behind them. A shout with reverb baked in is harder to fit to your space. Stack a few takes, or the same take pitched slightly, for a gang-vocal effect.

Vocals carry more rights than other samples: there is the recording, and there is the person’s voice. Free libraries where performers record lines for others to use are the safest source. Every card shows the licence verdict, and the credit line when one is required.

Questions

How loud should a vocal shout be in the mix?
Loud enough to land as an accent, usually just before or on the downbeat of a drop. Compress it hard, add a short delay or reverb throw, and duck the music slightly under it so it cuts through.
Can I use a shout that says a brand or artist name?
Avoid it. Even when the recording is licensed, a name or catchphrase can raise trademark or personality-rights issues. Generic shouts such as 'hey', 'yeah' or counts are the safe choice.
