The sound of streets
City ambiences capture the constant hum of urban life: traffic, footsteps, distant sirens, café chatter, trains and pedestrian crossings. They set a scene in film and games, add realism to podcasts, and give lo-fi and ambient tracks a sense of being somewhere.
Watch for hidden rights
A city recording may contain more than noise. Music playing from a shop, a radio, or a busker is a copyrighted performance that can trigger Content ID or a claim. Before you release, listen through the whole recording for music, advertising or clear speech.
Field recordists publish city recordings from around the world under Creative Commons, and the BBC archive holds decades of them under personal-use terms. Each card shows the licence and its verdict, and the location when the source records it in the title.
