From clinks to crashes
Glass covers a wide range: the gentle clink of two wine glasses, a bottle set on a table, a window breaking, a pane shattering on concrete. Short clinks and taps are pitched and bell-like; breaks are noisy, bright and full of tiny falling pieces that make them sound real.
Using glass in a mix
Breaking glass is very bright, so it can sound harsh at full volume. Roll off a little above 10 kHz and put the weight in a separate low impact layer. For film, match the size of the break to the object: a bottle and a shop window need very different tails.
In music, glass clinks make delicate percussion and sparkly textures, especially in ambient and lo-fi. Recordings from foley artists on Freesound and Wikimedia Commons are often CC0 or CC BY; each card says which, with the credit line when one is needed.
