The lo-fi palette

Lo-fi hip hop borrows from sampled jazz and soul records, but most producers now build it from new material: Rhodes or piano chords, nylon or clean electric guitar, soft boom-bap drums and a layer of noise. Loops give you that palette quickly, and this collection gathers free ones in every part of it.

Making them your own

A loop on its own is a starting point. Re-pitch it, chop it into a new order, or play its chords back through a sampler with a slow attack. Add your own crackle and a gentle low-pass, and use a saturation or tape plugin for wow and flutter.

Lo-fi beats are often released commercially on streaming playlists, so licences matter here as much as anywhere. Many loops on free sites are for non-commercial use only. Every card shows a verdict; Commercial-safe keeps only the ones you can release.

Questions

What makes a loop sound lo-fi?
Reduced fidelity on purpose: a softened high end, gentle pitch wobble like a worn tape, saturation, vinyl crackle and swung, slightly loose timing. Chords are often jazzy sevenths and ninths played on keys or guitar.
What tempo is lo-fi hip hop?
Usually between about 70 and 90 BPM, with a swung or behind-the-beat feel. Many loops are labelled at double time (140 to 180), so halve the number if a loop feels too fast.
